The main goals of this work package are to establish the ecological, economic sustainable and optimal drinking water supply in the model region (city of Darkhan), to determine the magnitude of the potential impact due to the improvement of the critical environmental situation in the urban and rural region, to supply the Ger areas (the traditional dwelling of the nomads in Mongolia) located in the surround of the city core Darkhan with drinking water and to suggest most suitable control measures with an optimum of cost benefits. By using the software products HydroDyn and POS, the development in FhAST will be determined by the vulnerabilities and bottlenecks of the distribution networks. In addition an optimal planning for the construction and reconstruction of the supply networks and proposals for optimal management of the daily process operation will be presented. Thereby the most immense costs of reconstruction of the network and of running processes can be minimised.

  • Signing of the agreement between the Fraunhofer AST Ilmenau and the Mongolian project partners, drinking water supply and sewerage company of city Darkhan (USAG), the Mongolian University for Science and Technology Darkhan (MUST) and the Environmental protection agency of municipality of Darkhan-Uul aimag.
  • Launching of the project office at the MUST Darkhan

  • Dr. Sharaw and Dr. did an 3-day monitoring and analysis program for quality assurance in drinking water extraction in mining areas. Main focus of attention was the identification of heavy metals and interviews with the relevant people.
  • Later analysis made by FUGRO Consult GmbH in Germany shows that all the investigated heavy metal concentrations, except in Bor Tolgoi, are within the limitations of Drinking Water Ordinance.
  • In cooperation with other partners a complete balance of drinking water supply in city Darkhan by compairing water- wastewater- and pumping data of the WWTP was developed.
  • further calibration of the HydroDyn water supply network model togeteher with USAG. missing demand data have been added when they were known or estimated by population when they were unknown. A good match with the water balance was found.
For capacity building Fraunhofer AST held some lectures and practical trainings for control engineering, simulation, optimization, quality control and monitoring at the MUST in Darkhan. Further there were two fieldworks with about 20 students of MUST Darkhan at the WWTP of city Darkhan. MUST makes a contribution to creation of a concept for drinking water supply and wastewater treatment in the ger areas of Darkhan. MUST gets a partial payment for that from Department of Education, Culture and Science of Mongolia. Prof. Tsevel hands over a letter of recommendation for further worksteps with MoMo project.
